George Lucas Shows Fondness for Obi-Wan Kenobi Series, An Emblem of Prequel Legacy Appreciation
It seems the Obi-Wan Kenobi series has garnered high praise from George Lucas, marking it as a preferred endeavor among the recent additions to the Star Wars saga. Despite George Lucas taking a step back from the forefront of the Star Wars universe, every so often, his presence is felt either through visits to the sets of Disney Plus series or through whispers of his admiration for specific projects like the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
In a discussion with Full of Sith, Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm Story Group shared insights into the initial concerns surrounding the timeframe bridging Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. This period, according to Hidalgo, came with a predictable narrative for the audience. However, consulting Lucas before production began on Obi-Wan Kenobi helped to navigate these challenges.
"Engaging with George was a key part of the process. From the outset, we sought George’s perspective... His backing was unwavering," Hidalgo expressed. He further mentioned, "From what I’ve gathered, this series is among his most cherished new Star Wars outputs, as it honors and builds upon the legacy of the prequels."
Indeed, Obi-Wan Kenobi, which premiered on Disney Plus in 2022, brought together Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of the Jedi master with Hayden Christensen returning as the menacing Darth Vader (and in some parts, the younger Anakin Skywalker through flashbacks), focusing on Obi-Wan’s guardianship of Luke Skywalker on Tatooine alongside involvement in young Leia’s life.
With Deborah Chow at the helm, the series was celebrated with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Discussion surrounding a prospective second season has been ongoing, particularly with Ewan McGregor expressing his eagerness to reprise his role as of February. While formal announcements are yet to be made, excitement continues to build. Fans eagerly look forward to upcoming Star Wars movies and series that are in the works.
