Larian Studios Teases Future Projects and Decides Against Extended Baldur's Gate 3 DLC
Brimming with enthusiasm for future projects, the team behind Baldur's Gate 3 has revealed they are eager to embark on "two games that we want to make" and have a plethora of "concepts" waiting in the wings. The driving force behind Baldur's Gate 3, having moved on from the franchise and Dungeons & Dragons altogether, is still fervent about "two games that we want to make" and delving into various "concepts."
Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios, shared insights into the studio's future direction and his perspective on artificial intelligence in game production, among other topics. Addressing why the studio chose not to proceed with any further extensions beyond Baldur's Gate 3, Vincke disclosed: "Following the triumphant reception of Baldur's Gate 3, naturally, one might expect us to follow up with DLC."
"We began development on one and even toyed with the idea of BG4," he elaborated, "but it quickly became apparent that our passion wasn't there." This sentiment echoes Vincke's previous statements about the studio's decision to conclude its association with Baldur's Gate, pointing out the team felt obligated to develop DLC rather than being genuinely inspired to do so. "It wasn't emanating from a place of passion, and our studio prides itself on our heartfelt dedication," he remarked.
Furthermore, Vincke highlighted that the studio is now returning to its original plans, conceived even before Baldur's Gate 3's development commenced: "These were always intended as our subsequent endeavors. With two games we're excited to explore and an abundance of concepts, we decided it was time to conclude our journey with BG3." While it marks the end of an era for Larian and Baldur's Gate, Vincke expresses his desire to conclude on a positive note and "entrust this remarkable legacy to the next developer."
In an interesting turn, despite closing this chapter, Larian is enhancing Baldur's Gate 3 by developing extended "evil endings." Vincke revealed in the same interview that these conclusions will feature full cinematic presentations, with some being described as "genuinely sinister," promising a satisfying experience for those who revel in villainy.
This transition, while bittersweet for Baldur's Gate 3 enthusiasts, is seen as an invigorating development, potentially more thrilling than any DLC could have offered.
